In 1999, a Sicilian tour operator and his wife set off in search of a place that would encompass their vision of a quintessential island heaven. Traveling the globe for more than a year, they scoped many illustrious tropical destinations in Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Lovely as they were, nothing quite inspired the spark of transcendence they were seeking. Nothing, that is, until they landed on Eleuthera, a remote island in the Bahamian archipelago named after the Greek word for “freedom.” On the unspoiled stretch of shoreline where Cocodimama now sits, they were captivated by the most spellbinding sunset slipping beneath the vast glittering sea horizon. They were sold.
The name “Cocodimama” is derived from an Italian expression, “coco di mama.” It’s a phrase used to describe a mother’s affection for her child. And for years, the couple truly devoted themselves to the property as if it were a part of their family.
Ultimately, they opted to share their small slice of heaven with others. They opened a small mom-and-pop Italian restaurant with broad deck seating overlooking the water. Eventually, they expanded to open a small bed-and-breakfast of about a dozen rooms, each adorned with a unique aesthetic fusing Bahamian and Mediterranean-style accouterments. Cocodimama soon became a sought-after destination by visitors from around the world.
In 2007, the property was purchased by the Marriott chain, with the Urgo Hotel System taking the management reins. Just like those who fell in love with this enchanting place before us, our team strives to maintain the striking natural beauty and boutique beachfront resort feel that makes this place so uniquely its own, while also making improvements to maximize the comfort and quality of every guest experience.
